Real Madrid suffered an early exit in the Champions League quarter-finals and recently lost to Barcelona, allowing their arch-rivals to clinch the La Liga title. The poor results have created a tense atmosphere within the squad.
Last week, AS reported that Mourinho, who currently manages Benfica, is the only candidate left for the Real Madrid job. Club officials believe he is the right person to restore order in a dressing room that has become increasingly difficult to control.
Current head coach Alvaro Arbeloa took over in January following the dismissal of Xabi Alonso. Mourinho previously led Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning the La Liga title in the 2011/12 season, the Copa del Rey in 2010/11, and the Spanish Super Cup in 2011/12.
